Six Family Walks in Yorkshire

Arguably the walking capital of the UK, Yorkshire is a true rambler’s delight! With two national parks and some of the country’s most picturesque villages, there is almost too much to explore in the so-called “God’s Own Country”!

In our blog, we’ve already covered some of the best walks in Yorkshire. However, what if you want a day out with all the family? Here, we take a look at some of our favourite Yorkshire routes that are perfect for all ages and abilities.

Brimham Rocks

Yorkshire is as famous for its dramatic rock formations as its sweeping hills, and Brimham Moor is perhaps one of the finest examples. Situated in the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in North Yorkshire, the area is full of eroded rocks and rags that have assumed fantastic shapes!

Despite its rugged appearance, Brimham rocks is a relatively easy walk, with facilities and marked paths taking you around the area. A short circular walk can be completed in around one hour, perfect for little legs!

Castle Howard

If you’re looking for a family day out in Yorkshire, then you may wish to consider exploring Castle Howard, one of the UK’s most stunning stately homes. The house, dating back to the 1800s, is impressive in itself, but it also hosts extensive grounds that you are free to explore.

There are various walks available that start at Castle Howard and explore the surrounding Howardian Hills AONB. You can also enjoy a leisurely afternoon walk through the castle gardens if you’ve purchased admission!

Fountain’s Abbey

Another example of Yorkshire’s grand buildings, although now in a very different state to Castle Howard. Fountain’s Abbey, built into the North Yorkshire hills, is one of the country’s largest ruined monasteries.

The ruined monastery is a wonderous sight that sparks the imagination of adults and children alike. Fountain’s Abbey is also part of the Studley Royal Water Garden heritage site, making the area perfect for a stroll. There are cafes and play areas here, making the abbey ideal for a day out with little ones.

Kilnsey

If you are after a peaceful day exploring a Yorkshire village and its surrounds, then Kilnsey is a good choice. Situated in Wharfedale in North Yorkshire, it is a charming, laidback village surrounded by natural beauty.

One of the highlights is Kilnsey Crag, an overhanging limestone cliff that dwarves the village and is popular with climbers. An afternoon walk of the area can also include nearby Mastiles Lane, a popular countryside path once used by the Romans.

Malham Cove

If you’re looking for Yorkshire walks with rock formations, Malham Cove is an unmissable adventure. A stunning 260ft cliff face shaped like a natural amphitheatre, its sheer scale is enough to excite walkers of all ages. The fact that it also appeared in the Harry Potter film series is just a bonus!

Malham Cove’s popularity means that there are plenty of facilities nearby, and the footpath is very good. Depending on your route, it is possible to enjoy this location in one hour.

Yorkshire Sculpture Park

If you’re looking for something a little bit different, consider checking out the Yorkshire Sculpture Park in West Yorkshire. Set across acres of land just outside Wakefield, YSP is full of incredible artworks and provides a unique experience for families who are perhaps just getting into walking.

The Yorkshire Sculpture Park is a predominantly outdoor experience, with around 80 sculptures dotted across its open grounds at any one time. YSP features works from famous British and international artists, while the park also has activities for children and regularly hosts school trips.
