Our Favourite Family Walks in Scotland

The UK is full of stunning natural landscapes that are wonderful to explore, either by yourself or with your loved ones. While our country is synonymous with sweeping hills, if you’re after something a little more dramatic, then there are few places as exciting for trekkers than Scotland!

Famous for its rugged landscapes and seemingly untouched lands, Scotland is full of exciting destinations for nature lovers. If you’re hoping to share the country’s beauty with your little ones, then consider these walks, perfectly selected for all ages.

Cairndow

To the west of The Trossachs National Park just north of Glasgow, Cairndow is a traditional hamlet located on the beautiful Loch Fyne. A quiet town tucked away from civilisation, it is home to one of the best woodland adventures for young children: the Gruffalo Trail!

In Cairndow lies the Ardkinglas Estate and Garden. The garden features some of the country’s tallest trees and incredible swathes of bluebells and other flowers during spring and summer. The Gruffalo Trail invites children to follow a trail map through the garden inspired by the famous children’s book.

Dinnet

If you’re looking for a location that showcases Scotland’s rugged beauty, then consider the village of Dinnet, located on the east edge of Cairngorms National Park. The small village is known for the Muir of Dinnet, a beautiful region combining woodlands and heaths. However, it is most famous for a deep granite hole known as Burn O’Vat.

Burn O’Vat is a giant pothole formed in the glacial period from the granite of the region’s mountains. The mini colosseum can be fully explored as part of a walk of under two miles, creating an exciting adventure that leaves plenty of time for fun and games along the way!

Edinburgh

The capital of Scotland is quickly becoming a must-visit cultural destination. However, beyond the many family-friendly attractions, there are also plenty of natural parks to discover. One of the city’s best places for a day out is Holyrood Park and the imposing peak called Arthur’s Seat.

The hill, only a short walk from Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, is actually the remains of an extinct volcano. The summit is 251m above sea level and boasts incredible views of the city, but the path is maintained and easily accessible. Arthur’s Seat is an excellent balance between a hike and a leisurely ascent, making it ideal for lacing up your lightweight hiking boots and taking an hour or two away from the city for a picnic.

Inverness

Another Scottish city growing in popularity is Inverness, located in the north of the country. Besides being the main city from which to visit the famous Loch Ness, it’s also a place in itself that is great for enjoying walks with the family.

The Ness Islands are found along the River Ness that runs through the city and are accessible by beautiful Victorian suspension bridges. A natural sanctuary in the city, they are the perfect walking location for nature-loving families! Unlike many of Scotland’s most popular walks, the Ness Islands' walk is flat, perfect for a leisurely evening stroll without having to worry about hiking equipment!

Kelburn Castle

Scotland is full of exciting, historic castles set against stunning lakeside views. However, few are quite as eye-catching as Kelburn Castle in North Ayrshire. When the castle’s concrete facing needed repair, its owner agreed to a project which involved four Brazilian graffiti artists redesigning its exterior, creating a vibrant location that excites adults and children alike.

The stunning castle is also home to gorgeous woodlands which include trails designed for children. Surprises including the Fairly Village help children to appreciate the majesty of Scotland’s countryside.
